Very helpful article. Thanks. I am such a extreme visual learner, that I got lost in the first paragraph by the terms lip, land, and chisel. So here is a diagram to help others in my "class".

Good article. Thanks. From experience, some scopes will get damaged if the first image produced by the objective lens falls on the edge of the eyepiece, or the inside of the tube. In my case, it melted the black plastic on the eyepiece. You can look at the diagram at this link to see the way the light gets focused before the eyepiece in a typical telescope: By Szőcs Tamás - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=7138040

I remember the old vibrator relays in car tube type radios. I remember they would burn out after many hours of play. My question is, what was special about them that made them last as long as they would? Maybe the contacts were in a vacuum?

I finally read this reference about a boy derailing a train with a coin! It was not a little coin; "The offending coin was 3 ton slab of stone from the Yap islands." So I down vote this note from Mrs. Selmon

View Instructable »For the camping trail marker idea, maybe you could zip tie it backwards, using the slick side toward the ratchet. It will stay snug but easy to get off, and if you forget, the plant can still expand underneath.

Thanks for the theory sections. Although I worked for GE with the High Pressure Sodium lighting, and understood how that circuitry works, I never saw an explanation of how fluorescent lights are started. And now I understand.

The NYC Extra Shiny Top Coat does seem to last longer than the polyurethane, but if I wear the ring everyday, the coating only lasts about 2 weeks. I guess the perspiration attacks the coating. So I strip it, re-polish, and re-coat it. A sliver quarter needs no coating at least on my wife's ring and her hands.

From experience, the polyurethane doesn't seem to last any longer than clear fingernail polish. I am trying the suggested New York Color Long Wearing Nail Enamel, Extra Shiny Top Coat that I got from Amazon - 3 bottles for $5.24.
I have been doing that for years - I just used a long bolt, put the buffing wheels next to each other with no space, and clamped the bolt in the chuck - no need for the tail piece. Works well, but your idea is probably better. I'm only using 2 wheels for that.
