My wife and my daughter made this hedgehog-toy as an upcycling project in the kindergarten.
Step 1: Materials and Tools
The main resource for this project is an egg box, so it is a classical example of trash-to-treasure conversion. Aside from one egg box, you need:
- a piece of cardboard;
- hot glue;
- some liquid glue (we used PVA);
- brushes and paint (we used tempera);
- cutting knife.
Warning! Be careful using a cutting knife! If you work together with children, keep the knife away from children.
Step 2: The Face
Cut out one "pyramid" as shown in the picture. It will be the face of the hedgehog.
Cut bottoms of two pyramids for ears. Ears should be a bit asymmetric; we need one long side to glue it to the face. Fix them with hot glue.
Step 3: The Body
We need a lot of needles to make the hedgehog. Cut out needles from each side of a pyramid as shown in the picture.
Try to include a flat side of the pyramid, that flat part makes assembling and gluing easier. Each pyramid takes four needles. Don't get upset if your needles come off not identical; I believe it makes your hedgehog individual.
As far as we got enough needles, we may start forming the body.
Glue five needles to the face with hot glue.
Needles of each next row place between the previous, this way we will get the solid structure.
At the first, increase a distance between needles each row. After 7-10 rows start placing needles closer each other. So, the structure will get sphere shape.
The result should look like this.
Cut out a bottom of cardboard and glue it to the body.
Look at the hedgehog once again; maybe you decide to add some needless.
Step 4: The Final Touch
Get some scraps of egg box and mix it with PVA glue (or other liquid glue). Use this mixture to form eyes and nose.
Let it dry for one day before coloring. We used tempera for final coloring, but you can choose any painting you familiar with.
At first, we colored all the hedgehog by the ochre color. Then we emphasize needles by more dark and white colors.
Finally, color eyes and nose with black paint.
