Hi, I'll start by making one thing clear- I sweat. a lot.
Unfortunately, normal deodorants have what is called "anti- perspirant" which actually means that it prevents the body from sweating. That is done by the application of chemicals like alumnium to one of the most sensitive parts of our body with worrying proximity to lymphs. The sweating function of our body, like any other function has a good reason. It helps our body eliminate toxins, relieve heat and other positive things. It also has negative effects or at least negative for our way of living, mainly- it smells bad. So I wanted to find a deodorant that will be toxic free, will allow my body to sweat like it should do but will prevent the bad odour that comes with sweat. I have an office job and generally like to smell nice and be a part of modern society (:
I have tried many many store bought natural deodorant and none of them worked for me... I always smelled my own sweat at some point. The following reciepe works great for me and I've been using it for years.
IMPORTANT- some people are sensitive to or develop skin sensitivity to baking soda. If this is the case for you, don't use this reciepe as it will cause redness. You can try replacing it with arrow root powder or cornflour.
Step 1: Get Your Supplies
There are only three ingredients:
Baking soda, Coconut oil, essential oil (I chose Lavender but any scent you like should work-choose Tea-Tree or Eucalyptus for a fresh, strong and more 'masculine' version or Neroli or Jasmine for a gentler floral version)
You'll also need measuring cups, a spoon for mixing and a container with a lid for your final deodorant.
Step 2: Measure Equal Parts of Coconut Oil and Baking Soda
* the coconut oil pictured was kept in the fridge beforehand. depending on the temperature, Coconut oil can be liquid or buttery like in the picture. I prefer to have it cold for mixing but I then keep the deodorant outside.
Step 3: Combine
Step 4: Add Essential Oil
for an amount of 1/4 cup coconut oil and 1/4 baking soda I add about 5 drops.
Step 5: Mix and Store!
This is it, mix it until it reaches a smooth consistency and you are good to go! Store it in a container with a lid. It can be stored in room temperature and the consistency will change with the weather but it works in any form. Where I live it is 30 degrees almost 6 months a year, the coconut oil is completely liquid and it holds perfectly. if you prefer, you can keep it in the fridge and then it stays hard.
You can apply it to the skin like cream, using your finger. I quite like it because the leftovers of cocunut and lavender stay on m hands like handbalm once I wash the grains off. Some people find it uncomfortable, if you are one of them you can keep a little make up brush to apply it with in the container.
Enjoy your new natural deodorant!
