In this instructable I will show you how to make pop tarts. This homemade pop tart recipe is super easy to make. All you pretty much need is some pie crust dough, some jam or preserves, and then top them off with a homemade glaze. I grew up eating pop tarts and still like to make or buy them on occasion. If you have leftover pie dough after making a pie, make some pop tarts! :) If I can do it, you can do it. Let's get baking!

Step 1: Ingredients/Tools
- 1 pie crust (homemade or store bought)
- strawberry preserves (or your favorite jam, jelly, etc.)
- 1 to 2 cups of powdered sugar (125 to 250g)
- 1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract (3ml)
- 2 to 3 Tbsp. of milk (30 to 45ml)
- pizza roller or knife
- clean ruler
- sheet pan
- parchment paper or silicon baking mat

Step 2: Trim That Dough
First preheat the oven to 375 F (190 C). Now using your clean ruler trim your pie crust dough into equal rectangle shapes. You can use homemade pie crust or a store bought crust. Save those trimmings, you can combine them together and probably get another pop tart out of it. :) These wind up being roughly 3 inches by 4 inches, but it is totally up to you how big you make them.
Step 3: Fork and Preserves
Place the dough on to a silicone lined or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Then use a fork and poke holes into the ones that you will put on the top. Next heat up your preserves a little bit, especially if it was in the refrigerator. It is easier to spread when it is a little warm, as opposed to being cold. Spoon about 2 tablespoons worth of preserves and spread it out so it covers the middle area.
Step 4: Place, Crimp, Bake
Now place the tops over the bottom halves. Use a fork to crimp down the edges all the way around. This will help them to not come a part. You can also baste them with an egg wash which will help them stick, and if you baste them on the top you will get a nice golden look when they are done baking. Next bake them on the middle rack in the oven at 375 F (190 C) for 18 to 25 minutes until golden brown. It's okay if you get a little bit of a blow out with the preserves, it may or may not happen after baking. After they have been baked let them cool completely.
Step 5: Trim Away
Next after they have cooled you can trim away any excess preserves that may have come out while baking with a butter knife. You can also do this while still warm.
Step 6: Make That Glaze
Next we will make out thick glaze for the tops. In a medium size bowl add your confectioner's sugar, then about a third of your milk and the vanilla extract. Mix with a spoon or fork and add in more milk as necessary to get a nice thick mixture.
Step 7: Top and Sprinkle
Next add the glaze to the tops of the pop tarts and finish them off with your favorite kind of sprinkles. :) Enjoy!
