Introduction to Hand Embroidery

About: I work at instructables by day, and turn into a stitch witch by night. follow me on instagram @jessyratfink to see what i'm working on! ^_^

Hello and welcome to my hand embroidery class!

In this class, I'm going to teach you all the basics of hand embroidery. During the course of the class, you'll complete two samplers that will teach you 11 different stitches. I've also included two final class patterns and a tool-themed embroidery border pattern so you can customize the final class pattern with your own text!

In addition to showing you a variety of stitches, I'll teach you how to:

  • Choose floss and fabrics,
  • Use hoops and frames for holding your work,
  • Store and organize your floss,
  • Wash, block and dry embroideries,
  • Finish your embroideries in wooden hoops,
  • And create and transfer your own custom patterns.

I'll also share all the tips and tricks I've learned over the years. Embroidery is definitely a hobby that requires a bit of practice to perfect, but you'll get there much faster and enjoy it more by using the right techniques!

Step 1: Class Overview

In this class, we'll be learning 11 stitches, including:

  • Backstitch
  • Running stitch
  • Straight stitch
  • Split stitch
  • Stem stitch
  • Satin stitch
  • French knots
  • Petal stitch (also known as lazy daisy)
  • Fly stitch (open and closed)
  • Woven wheel stitch
  • Chain stitch

I'm providing two samplers to teach you the stitches. We'll be working on a mountain sampler first and a more advanced floral sampler after. I'll also supply a final pattern for you to stitch! To complete the class, you must finish both samplers and one version of the final class pattern. :)

If you finish both samplers, you can also PM me here on Instructables and I'll allow you to choose one free pattern from my store, making jiggy. That way you've got something else to work on once you're finished with the class patterns!

Mountain Sampler

This sampler will teach you six of the most basic embroidery stitches. It will also teach you about spacing.

We'll embroider this together and I'll walk you through how to do each stitch along the way. This sampler should take around 2-3 hours.

Floral Sampler

This sampler will teach you five advanced and decorative stitches. Because embroidered florals are all the rage, I wanted to give you a complete toolbox of stitches to create your own floral patterns. :D

This sampler should take around 4-6 hours.

Final Patterns

I've provided three tool themed patterns with the class! One is print and one is cursive to give you a little variety. I've also included just the tool border in case you'd like to include your own text!

To complete the class, you'll need to finish both samplers and one variation of the final pattern.

Final pattern times will vary based on how you choose to embroider them - it's completely up to you. On the finished pattern above, I would say the text took about an hour, and the individual tools took 15-20 minutes each.

Step 2: Why Should You Take This Class?

I know there are no shortage of embroidery photo and video tutorials out there! But most of them only cover one particular facet of embroidery.

This class is a comprehensive overview of everything you need to get started, including patterns! By taking this class, you'll gain an immense amount of embroidery knowledge and be ready to set out on your own - embroidering whatever you like, however you like!

I have over 10 years of embroidery experience, and I've been embroidering professionally for my shop making jiggy for the last several years! I'm also a professional crafter and skills teacher, and have taught millions of people new skills throughout my years here at Instructables.

I hope you'll join me and take this class! I've worked incredibly hard to make it easy to navigate and understand, and I know you'll love it! :D

Step 3: About Your Instructor

I'm Jessy Ratfink. I've been publishing instructables for almost 10 years now and have over 500 instructables published - you can see them here! While publishing on Instructables started as a hobby, I now work for the Instructables Design Studio creating classes and tutorials.

Also: I'm 100% addicted to embroidery. Hand embroidery has been my biggest passion for several years now - I embroider almost every single day! :D

Embroidery started as a hobby for me when I was gifted my grandmother's sewing and embroidery materials years after she passed away.

She was an amazing embroiderer and quilter, and two of the items I received were embroidered state bird and flower quilt tops. (Seriously, she embroidered 100 state birds and flowers! Amazing.) I have many fond memories hanging out with my gram as she embroidered those quilt tops and watched Maury. I ended up trying it out myself and getting hooked!

While I only embroidered for myself at first, I quickly started making things for family and friends too. Before I knew it, strangers online were asking to buy my embroideries and soon I was embroidering all the time! :)

I sell both embroidered hoop art and embroidery patterns in my Etsy shop, making jiggy! If you'd like to see what I'm currently working on, follow me on Instagram @makingjiggy. I've always got a new project in the works. :D

Now that you've learned all about me and the class, let's move on to two of my favorite subjects - floss and fabrics!
