Made for my children, I tried to recreate a toy that I had and have intensively used during my early youth. The commercially available riding toys did not seem to be usable, they often have large wheels just behind the legs of the child, which reduces the possibility of pushing to gain momentum.
It is a toy very easy to make and you will be able to adapt it to materials you already have got. The direction is basic but functional and dimensions are well suited for children. Proofed by my test pilots son and daughter :)
The most important is to found good wheels and a good fixing for the wheels. In my case roller blade wheels and mounting brackets. Good in terms of dimensions it looks more like a cinder block than anything else, so it is up to you the to improove style :)
Items you will need :
- Wood: plank wood 2000 x 140 mm thickness 14mm
- Wood: handlebar and front axle 270 and 180 in total 450x30x30mm
- Metal: tube 420mm length with a diameter 16mm
- Metal: 5 brackets 30 x 30 mm
- Four wheels 70mm diameter
- Washer 16mm internal diameter Screws: small hinge for the trunk
Eight 5mm thread and nuts for handlebars and front axle
- Two hinges to mount hatch
I made my brackets with reclaimed metal, there is a hole for the passage of the axle of the wheel, and two holes to screw them in the woods, not in the forest ^ ^ on the top of the axle !
A 5th bracket will serve as a cleat to limit the travel of the front axle.
Cost of the build is ... between 0 and more according to what you have, or have not, in your precious pile of junk.
Step 1: The Body
The body will take you the longest time due to the drying time. Do not try to save time on this step, the wood glue is 24 hours waiting for a good result.
The steering will pass through two holes drilled in the middle frame at 5 cm from the front of the wearer.
With the wood planks cut :
- Three rectangles 500x140 mm for the base and sides
- One 360x140 mm for the top
- One 205x140 mm for the hatch
Shape the sides by removing a 140x140mm triangle.
Step 2: Steering Column
While the body is drying you can go on with the steering column.
Double check pictures to prevent errors.
Prepare the tube and drill two holes of 5 mm diameter, 15 mm from the end and the beginning.
Drill the handlebar, 270 x 30 x 30 in center with a 16mm diameter hole and a 5mm hole wich will block the steering tube. Assemble and screw handle bar with the tube and then pass the assembly in the body.
The work continues underneath, adding a washer and then hubbing the axle. The axle, 180x30x30, is locked identically to the handlebars. The washer makes it possible to rest on a surface limited to the weight of the pivot.
To limit travel of front axle put the fifth bracket where desired travel is reached.
Step 3: Rear Axle and Hatch
Mount rear brackets as for the front axle, except that they are screwed from below to the chassis.
Nothing special for the hatch, mount depending of your hinges.
Step 4: Refinement and Safety
It does not look like rocket science but it is necessary to plan many things to do a toy. In addition to ease of use, it is also necessary to think about the safety of the child and also not to create a ram that will happily break down the bottom of your walls, furniture and shins. So do not let anything too edgy or too sharp. You can soften the angles of the pieces of wood with a wood file.
