Thanks!Generally a spectrometer is more versatile than a polarimeter. It can be used for the identification of substances and also for quantitative measurements, while the polarimeter is limited to determine concentrations of (known and optically active) substances. At the moment I can't image the advantage of combining both (except some kind of filter), may be you can elaborate more on this?I guess a spectrometer is harder to build, so a polarimeter may be a good start to get acquainted with the basics of light sensors, motors and electronics. So whatever you decide, good luck!

Added basic math section on my site, fixed links and one spelling mistake. At the moment I managed to get reproducibility within 0.01°, mainly by using batteries or power banks for everything, as the power supply for my PI (not the original one) caused fluctuations in values. I'm working now with a ADS1115 and a photodiode/-transistor to get better responsiveness (no warm up and shifting of values).Unfortunately it shows that the analyzer wheel still causes trouble when moving over a distance (10°) too large, it can not get back to 0.
I've never seen this TV show, but what you say about "Festivus" makes perfect sense to me. :)
Thank you for this one. Actually I tried something similar (the bolt I used, even looks the same) but the magnet was very weak with a 9V battery. Now I'm encouraged to try again and not just falling back to buying one.
After a 2 week digital detox vacation (only a small tablet...), I got to update my homepage with some more background information. More to come, promised. Thank you.
Thank you for the hint, I haven't seen Dolpi before, but the "spinoff" with an old 1980's camera here on instructables (user prutchi). Lots of info, very interesting!
Hello, thank you. A spectrometer analyses the absorption of light by some substance over a range of wavelengths. The rate of absorption varies with the wavelength, yielding typical spectra for different substances. In the polarimeter we just deal with one (ideally) wavelength and the rotation of polarized light, a different physical property.
