I wound up keeping the same settings as wood with carving. I did have a good bit I needed to clean up afterward so I'm guessing I was running it too fast. But for the most part it worked out pretty well!

I need to make a none CNC version of it!
Inside of Easel (and most GCode sending software) you have the ability to setup multiple passes with different bits. So I could designate the 1/8 up cut the remove the majority of the waste and create a smooth carve. Then the detail bit with be the V-Bit. You wouldn't need to make separate patterns, the software would calculate the paths automically for you.

Great call on the belt sander. I've recently purchased one for just that task. Good call on the blue chalk, didn't know that was an automotive trick as well!

No!!!!!!!!!! Man of everyone who has seen this project you were the first one to notice I had a typo. I didn't even know I messed up until I read your comment and double checked the sign.I feel like you should get a prize...maybe a mispelled star sign ha!

I LOVE the contrast between the olive wood and metal! Great job

That would have been great! What programs allow you to do this? I had a hard time finding one that would give me a good export to bring in illustrator to grab all the stars to put into a vector.
View Instructable »I don't have a lot of experience with laser's but I have seen something similiar done before. One option is use clear polyacrylic and etch the stars in with the led's shooting up from the bottom. Also if your concerned about burn marks I've heard that you can cover the top in painters tape so the burning sticks mostly to the top!

That is definitely on my list to try! I wasn't sure what result I could get on the acrylic with the CNC but I've seen people get some amazing results! There might be a Star Wars related blueprint in my future get cut out ;)

I actually almost painted the back panel a glossy white to get the reflection. That probably would have let you use less lights. The main issue I hit is that when you view it from an angle only some of the lights will show through due to the thickness of the 1/4 plywood.

Good call, yeh I debated doing a straight cut out vs. the v-carve. The cut out would have more contrast which would have been nice!
Thanks Bruce! This was my first time posting a full write up on Instructables, really enjoying it!
