List of Upcoming Contests (updated 1/8/19) Answered

Hello everyone!

Below is a partial list of the 2019 contest calendar. Keep in mind that this list is subject to change and contests will continue to be added throughout the year.

The contests below are already in planning, and I've left off ones that we're still trying to decide on. The months indicate when the contests will be launching. All contests will launch near the beginning of each month.

Keep in mind that the list below is not set in stone. All contests and dates are subject to change!

If I wanted to supply a prize for a particular contest in the future, where do I go to sign up?

We don't let individuals submit prizes. That said, I'm curious to what you had in mind?

Something dangerously explosive, I'd guess ;-)

Well, I lately have been working on building my own design of a Delta 3D printer (based on the RepRap philosophy), one of my goals for the project is to be able to market it in a DIY kit form. I thought it would be cool to donate a couple of these kits as prizes for certain contests (although it would be a while from now, I'm still working on the prototypes).

I'm also working on developing a new tricopter drone design, with similar intentions.

And lastly, I remember that just over a year ago, I was stuck hot-gluing cardboard together and wishing I had access to better tools and materials. I entered many, many contests in the hopes of being able to improve my workshop (and thereby my projects). I never did win anything all that useful (in fact I only won once), but through my quest to improve my projects and Instructables, I gained many skills and learned a lot about making things, which opened up some great opportunities to me. Through these, I am now sitting in a room with not one, but four 3D printers, a nice set of tools, and a much better computer than I had a year ago.

I want to help others discover what I discovered, and motivate them to do whatever it is they do better, so that they may have similar experiences and opportunities opened to them. It's not really so much about donating prizes as it is about helping stimulate creativity and ingenuity by giving others a motivation to work towards.

We have done a puzzle challenge once. We may do it again in the future. I am not sure about when we might run a math challenge.

Was wondering if there would be any updates with the new year. It also appears the contest archive page has a glitch in it as all of the 2018 and a maybe a few 2019 contests are showing up under January. Is it showing up for everyone else like this?

Updates, yes please!
The bug has been fixed, but I saw it earlier and it's happened a few times before. Now that I think of it I think it also happened in the previous Januarys... Probably something to do with the new year.

I would love it if there were the option to get emails announcing new contests when they go live. Is there such a thing, and I've missed it?

Any November contest updates?

The November contests will launch Monday. Sorry about the delay. Autodesk shuts down every year between Christmas and New Years, and we wanted to make sure that we had all appropriate staff on hand to close down all of the contests properly.

The only current change to the contest calendar posted here is the replacement of the Math Challenge with a Puzzle Challenge. We may add another 4-week challenge in December, but it is a few days too early to tell. January is not quite pinned down yet, but expect an update soon.

In particular, keep an eye out for a contest with a very large prize starting in January that is open to any type of project! It is a little too early for me to say more about it though. :)

I'm keeping my beady eye open for your update. The one issue with the new single entry rule is that it'll be a real bummer if a more applicable contest comes out after entering another one, meaning I am going to be sitting on projects waiting for the perfect contest. My projects take far longer than a month to do usually, so having a list that lets us plan ahead will promote high quality entries.

I still think it's a fair move though, it will be nice to see variety in the winners.

Indeed. This is especially true if you require parts from overseas and/or custom made parts such as PCBs. It's not uncommon that a single project takes several months from the first idea to the final result.

I have a question about the contest entries; is it possible to enter the same instructable into 2 contests if the first contests ends while the second contest is still open for entering? I can't find any information in the contest rules or the forum about this. Thank you

Nope. 1 project to 1 contest. It does not matter if the contest it is in closes.

It would be nice to have the contests that have eligibility dates that are a year wide (such as the Halloween, Full Spectrum Laser and Epilog Laser contests) allow instructables to enter 2 contests - the above mentioned contests and 1 other contest.

Thank you for your answer.

Is there a page where all the changes Instructables went through during the last 7 month are listed? I tried to find something, but the forum search and myself seem to be not the best friends and to all my search requests I got only very old (4-8 years old) answers.

No. Unfortunately not.

There is this forum topic about the contest changes though:
https://www.instructables.com/topics/Important-Cha...

We've been doing better about announcing important site changes over the last few months. Unfortunately, as you have discovered, there is currently no place they are indexed, and the forum search is admittedly not the best (as it currently stands). I have put in requests to improve both of these, but there unfortunately currently is no timeline that I can offer.

What are the differences between a "contest" and a "challenge"? It looks like challenges have a shorter entry time and contests seem to have bigger prizes. Anything else?

randofoDIYJRAY

Reply 6 months ago

Those are basically the difference. The size of the prize and length of the contest.

Quick question: Since the change of contest entries and its reduction from 3 to 1, will the Halloween Contest still allow Instructable entries published prior to its launch date like in previous years?
